This page provides instructions on how to use a custom splint with your TGuard appliance, to discourage removal of the thumb.

Note: Please read and understand all directions before proceeding with the splint. If you have any doubts, please stop, and contact us first. Failure to follow these directions may result in unintended consequences.

The image below shows what the splint looks like inside of the device. If your splint is not currently inserted into the device, please assemble it first, so that the two studs on either side of the splint protrude through the corresponding holes in the AeroThumb device.

The first step is to place the splint / TGuard on the child’s hand, to visually see and understand where the splint is supposed to be positioned. Make sure the tube is sitting as low as possible on the hand, and the splint should be touching (or very close to) the skin between the index finger and thumb.

TGuard / Splint on the child’s hand. Observe the position of the splint, as you will later attempt to tape it to the thumb in the same position.

Once you have noted this position, remove the splint from the device by separating the long extensions and gently pulling it off of the splint, one side at a time.

Next, put the splint alongside the child’s thumb, in the same position noted earlier. If it is not placed in a good position, it will cause discomfort, because the position of the splint will affect the position of the TGuard, and any tension will be felt through the tape on the thumb.

Splint placed in the proper position, just before securing it with tape.

Use non-stretching medical tape, such as 3M Durapore, to wrap several layers around the splint and the thumb, so that the splint is securely fixed to the child’s thumb.

Then, put the device back on, over the splint. Spread the two long strap extensions, and push one of the studs of the splint through the corresponding hole in the TGuard, then repeat for the other side.

Finally, finish assembly of the device as you normally would.

The splint will prevent bending of the thumb, and should not be removed while the device is on. Be sure to monitor use of the device to ensure it is not being intentionally destroyed or abused, and be sure to remove the device at least once daily to inspect all components, as well as the skin.
